John joined East Malling Research Station from commercial fruit growing in 1964 working with scientists on pruning and spraying trials. He left for further training at Hadlow College and returned to EMRS in 1968 in charge of staff looking after field experiments and also Hatton Gardens. John then became Technical Propagator in the East Malling Research Station Nursery looking at and introducing new techniques. He subsequently transferred to Nursery Manager in 1978, growing trees and rootstocks for research purposes, for release to the UK and for export. From 1990 John also managed the (then) new glasshouse section until his retirement in 2000, growing and maintaining plants in experiments, multiplying new plants for release to the horticultural industry and overseeing some aspects of Plant Health exports and imports for EMRS.
John now works part-time for EMR/EMS and provides expert tuition for EM Short Courses in Top and Soft Fruit Pruning, Grafting and Husbandry.
