Summer Pruning of Fruit Trees

This largely practical workshop will cover the basic principles of summer pruning and enable you to commence pruning with confidence. 

Some of these will take place partly in the Hatton Fruit Garden formerly the kitchen garden of the Grade 1 listed Bradbourne House. Plantings in the Hatton Fruit Garden were inspired by the fruit plantings in Louis XIV kitchen garden at Versailles. The fruit trees have been trained and pruned over many decades to produce cordons, espaliers, goblets, pyramids, fans, arches, crowns, le bateau and arcure forms. 

This practical workshop will cover the basic principles of summer pruning perfect for gardeners of all levels. Whether you are looking to tame an overgrown tree or shape your garden for better fruit production, this course will give you the skills and confidence to get started.

The 3 hour session will cover:

• Why we prune and when
• Summer v Winter pruning: what’s the difference?
• What happens to your tree after pruning
• How to control growth and maintain healthy structure
• Shaping trees to fit your garden perfectly
• Tools and how to use them
• Insider tips and trade secrets from experienced pruner

The morning courses will run 9:00am to 12:00pm.
