Safe Use of Brushcutters/Trimmers

Training is available using fuel-powered or battery-powered machinery. You can complete both certifications during the course if required.

On successful completion of the Lantra Awards or NPTC course, you will be able to:

• Understand and comply with current health, safety, and legal requirements when using a brushcutter or trimmer.
• Identify hazards, warning signs, machine guards, and safe working practices.
• Select and wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the required standards.
• Carry out routine maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s handbook.
• Identify common faults and defects, determine which can be safely rectified by the operator, and recognise when specialist repair is required.
• Select the correct cutting head for different vegetation types and working conditions.
• Safely mix fuel (where applicable), manage battery-powered equipment, and start the machine safely from both hot and cold conditions.
• Operate a brushcutter/trimmer safely while protecting yourself, colleagues, the public, property, and the environment.
• Plan and carry out work efficiently using safe, systematic working methods.
• Correctly use the manufacturer’s instruction manual and parts list for maintenance and operation.
