Lead by our expert, this course will teach you how to graft apple trees, focusing on whip and tongue grafting.

This course is a single day, five-hour practical course largely inside, but with some theory.

It will deal with:

  • tongue and groove grafting of apple trees
  • the collection, and storage of plant sources and after care.
  • course content will also look at inserting pollinators into trees and discuss framework grafting.

Attendees will, under guidance, practice safe knife control and cut both components of whip and tongue grafting and use of ties as well as wax to seal wounds.

Participants will be able to take away at course end two bare-root grafted apple varieties to grow on in 2022. Those wishing to take trees away must bring a suitable bag to protect and take away the trees. (see kit list)

It would be helpful when applying, to indicate what degree of previous experience you have had with grafting

The maximum number for this course is six people.

You need to be 18 years or older to attend this course with us.

You will need to bring:

  • A notebook (an A4 summary sheet will be handed out, but it cannot contain all the details of this practical course)
  • A knife suitable for grafting (straight bladed, sharpened on both sides of the cutting edge, with a blade approximately 2.5 inches or 7cm long). It must not be serrated, have “chips” or have a curved blade. It need not be sharp as it can be sharpened on the day.
  • Any two lengths of healthy one year wood of apple that you wish to graft. They ideally need to be pencil thick at the base and not have fruit buds. It should, if possible, be 10 inches (25cm) long. It you cannot provide this quality of wood, then bring what you can and we will see if it can be grafted. Do not cut off the tip of the shoots. Please collect the wood the day before the course, keep it moist, wrap it in polythene and store it in a cool place, but NOT with any fruit. Please label it with the variety and your name. I will have about 7-8 other varieties for use if you want to use any of them.
  • Any photographs of trees at home you wish to graft as this will help in deciding what you will need to do at home.

If you want to take a grafted tree or trees away with you then please provide a polythene sleeve or wrap 2.5 feet long.
