East Malling Short Courses Staff and Instructors
All our staff and instructors will be following the above advice. In the event that they need to self-isolate this could lead to cancellation of courses at short notice, although we will do our best to avoid this.
If the situation in the UK deteriorates, it may become necessary to cancel courses in response to guidance from public health authorities. Should this be necessary we hope our customers will be understanding.
East Malling Short Courses
East Malling Short Courses, established in June 2011, supplies professional training for land based industries, in particular fruit growers in Kent and the South East and also for enthusiastic amateur gardeners who are interested in caring for their fruit trees.
The primary objective of the Trust is the advancement of science for public benefit, primarily through the support of research and development, particularly in the fields of horticultural and other plant-based disciplines.
The excellent facilities at NIAB EMR and the expertise of their staff have been instrumental in the success of the Short Courses Training Department. East Malling Short Courses is a registered Lantra Awards approved Training Provider and has more recently become a City and Guilds Assessment Centre. Its reputation for efficient and quality training is growing and interest in our courses has been very high. EMSC remains sensitive and responsive to the needs of local businesses. It is forming links to become more involved with their training requirements.
East Malling Assessment Centre, approved by City &Guilds (NPTC), was established in April 2017 as part of East Malling Short Courses. This has been a natural progression for the training centre, which has grown to become successful and well regarded since its inception in June 2011.
NPTC was established more than 50 years ago as part of the City and Guilds Group it is the largest recognised awarding body within the environmental and land-based sectors for vocational qualifications. Skills are assessed on the candidates experience, competence, technical knowledge and understanding resulting the in the candidate being assessed as ‘Competent’ or ‘Not Yet Competent’.
East Malling Assessment Centre is located on the picturesque East Malling Research Centre site. It is within easy access of the M20 motorway, East Malling train station and is situated a few miles west of Maidstone. It boasts its own classroom, which is available to other organisations to hire and it is also set up to be used for computer assessments as required.
The Centre works with a wide experienced team of trainers and NPTC approved assessors, who are all audited by external verifiers working within this industry. We offer a wide range of courses, which can then be independently assessed.
Please contact us if you are interested in training, booking an assessment or becoming an assessor.
In addition to the technical and legislative training, East Malling Short Courses is also offering workshops for the amateur gardener. These will take place in the Hatton Fruit Garden; formerly the kitchen garden of the Grade 1 listed Bradbourne House.
Plantings in the Hatton Fruit Garden were inspired by the fruit plantings in Louis XIV kitchen garden at Versailles.
Amateur training workshops will focus on seasonal pruning, how to plant and establish your fruit trees and bushes. For the more adventurous amateur gardener there will also be a session on grafting.
Through these classes you will learn how to manage a fruit crop in a small area, how to control your tree growth and what to do when things appear to get out of hand.
Please feel free to call or email us if you need any advice, have any questions or would like to attend a course.
